I am currently a second year Mathematics student at the University of Edinburgh. My family home is in North East London, where for the last two years I have been a successful Maths tutor. I was employed both by my school to take on extra support classes for GCSE students, and privately for one-to-one lessons, I now continue to be an active private tutor.
I believe that age difference can be a massive factor in inhibiting the engagement and learning of a student. I find students can find it much easier to engage with, and relate to, somebody who remembers being in their position, and therefore has a clear strategy on getting past the hurdles that they face.
For the first few weeks of teaching a new student, we work through content being taught in class at that point, until either I can spot weaknesses, or the student or parents comes forward with topics they would personally like to improve on.
It always upset me when my teachers could not think of a way of explaining something I struggled on, and so I ensure, that as a tutor, I will never confine myself to a restrictive way of teaching, and will always research new ways of teaching a new topic if a student still holds some confusion.
I have taught students aged 10 through to 16, and helped build the confidence of each of my students. I have had students in the past suffering from learning disabilities and I ensured I worked with the parents to find a pace of learning that adapted appropriately to their needs, and also capitalised on their strengths.
I have DBS clearance from back home, and can provide references.
Brendan has a really special gift for teaching Maths, I would highly recommend his style and technique. Having sat in a few lessons with my daughter I am very happy with her progress so far.
My daughter has now had several lessons with Brendan (Maths GCSE). She thinks he is a great teacher, patient and good at explaining things. He keeps the sessions interesting, has a bubbly personality and my daughter likes the fact that he is young and sat Maths GCSE fairly recently. His mathematical knowledge is top notch !
