My name is Ian and I am an experienced tutor specialising in Maths, Physics and English as Foreign language. I am currently a Masters student at the University of Edinburgh studying International Development My previous studies include a BA and an MSc in Experimental and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge as well as a scholarship year in Fukuoka, Japan where I studied Japanese.

For the past two years I have been working for a charity as a manager of one of their learning centres which provide academic support sessions and deliver customised education programmes for schools and students aged 7-19. As part of the charity's leadership team I also trained staff on how to best provide tuition to students and took specific responsibility for the implementation of the charity's university application support as well as schemes run with the universities of Cambridge and Oxford.

Prior to this I worked as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher in both the UK and Japan. As well as providing tailored tuition in a broad range of subjects, I have designed and delivered a variety of educational programmes in conjunction with schools and teachers. This has given me a clear understanding of educational frameworks and assessment criteria and how to support students to achieve their academic targets..

Due to my previous work supporting students with university applications and with CVs, I am also capable of delivering sessions themed around personal statements and job applications.

I am passionate about supporting young people to achieve their academic potential. In order to do this I work with tutees to understand their individual learning needs and their particular goals and to then formulate a step-by-step plan which will allow them to achieve their targets.. The first session I provide will be based on this and so will often involve an exploration of current knowledge as well as opportunities to build rapport and trust with the tutee which is vitally important for a successful tutoring experience.

At the heart of my tutoring is a calm and patient approach which creates an environment conducive to learning and encourages the student to explore their own ideas and to apply their knowledge to tackle new and unfamiliar questions and concepts.

Ian is a very good maths tutor who has been teaching my 15 year old daughter for her GCSE exam. She sits the first of three this week and has gained confidence thanks greatly to his teaching. He is always punctual and arrives before the time, which is another positive factor for which I value him highly.

Ian agreed to help my son prepare for the Physics Higher at very late notice after my son had a previous (non-Tutora) tutor who wasn't that competent as well as attending a pretty ineffective Easter Physics study course. Ian really went out of his way to find a suitable time to tutor my son as it was close to exam time and he was very busy. My son enjoys the tutoring sessions and takes a lot from them. Ian has boosted his confidence in attempting to answer Physics questions and I see real signs of progression in the few hours he's spent with Ian. He is very easy to get along with and very good at helping my son understand the areas he has problems with.

We have had 9 lessons from Ian to help my daughter with her Higher Maths (it's beyond me!). Ian has been really patient and friendly and she has found it really useful. Tomorrow is the exam and we shall see how it goes.

Ian is a great tutor - patient and understanding. Teaches the theory behind the questions so that the question makes more sense and therefore the answer is more easily achieved. Goes through each question methodically and practices questions with me - so helpful. My understanding is better because of Ian's teaching - highly recommend Ian as a tutor

Another great session with Ian who calmly demonstrates the concepts so it is easier for my son to understand and work things out for himself. Thank you!

Ian is an excellent tutor and can't help but highly recommend him. My daughter has progressed well and is very happy with her lessons so much so we are booking an hour each week upto her higher just to make sure everything is covered and she is comfortable with it all. Thanks Ian.

Ian is great. My son worked with him on Nat 5 maths last year and Ian is helping him again this year for higher. He is patient and encouraging and is really helping Ruaridh with the material.

My daughter was very happy with her first lesson. She told me that Ian is one of the best teachers she ever came across with, very satisfied and very looking forward to the following lessons.

Ian has been working with my son since last Autumn to help him prepare for his higher physics. He's been great, working at a pace that suited Leo, patient and thorough. Leo has improved a lot in his understanding & is much more confident about his exam next week. Thank you!

We've only had one lesson to date but Ian was very pleasant, he had a nice way about him and my son liked Ian and actually enjoyed the lesson. He assessed my son and identified how best to build upon his knowledge. We have booked more lessons!
