I'm a composer, piano teacher, jazz pianist & screenwriter based in Edinburgh. After studying classical piano & composition at Edinburgh Napier University, I went on to gain an MSc in Film Composition from Edinburgh University, graduating with Distinction. Shortly after graduating, I was invited to intern with Marvel animation composer Guy Michelmore at his studio in Chichester. In 2013, I scored Scott Harris’ debut feature film “Being Ginger” which is currently available on Netflix. I've scored short films for 2015 Cannes Palme d’Or nominee Dan Hodgson and 2016 Scottish BAFTA winner Duncan Cowles.
As a pianist, I have been playing for over 20 years. I studied classical piano under Nicholas Ashton and jazz studies under Haftor Medbøe at Edinburgh Napier University. From 2013 to 2016 I was the Resident Pianist in 10 Hill Place Hotel in Edinburgh. I would play four hours of varying material every Friday and Saturday evening. My repertoire ranges from classical to jazz; pop to funk; film soundtracks and folk songs.
I'm currently the Head of Music and Sound at The 2D Workshop. In 2015 the company released its first original short, Toonocalypse, which was co-written by myself and the film’s director and company manager, Owen Rixon. The film has received very positive feedback for its writing and its visuals and, since going online, has received over 50k views across a variety of platforms.
I'm more than happy to cycle out to your home and teach there (distance & time depending). If you don't have access to a piano, I have an office in Techcube (beside Summerhall) where I can teach from using my digital piano. Feel free to drop me a message with any questions & enquiries.
We're delighted that Callum was recommended to us! He is very communicative and flexible, and a really warm person with a great sense of humour and fun - a perfect match for my 8 year old son. Callum immediately knew how to engage him so a 30 minute lesson flies by. My son reports that Callum is "very good fun", "very kind" and "the best piano teacher ever".
Daughter has been enjoying a lot and likes callum, cant ask for more!
I’ve just started piano lessons with Callum after not playing for 20 years. Callum has an easy going teaching style which is just what I’m looking for and I feel I am making progress after only a few lessons. A really genuine and friendly person, as well as a great teacher, I would be happy to recommend Callum to others.
Callum has been a great tutor from the start. He has simplified a lot of theory and I have been able to put lot of it into practise. He has tailored the lessons for my liking and is very dynamic when it comes to his teachings.
I would recommend Callum for all ages and stages as he is a well rounded tutor and a very talented pianist.
Callum has been a fantastic tutor for piano, I couldn't recommend him more. He is a very enthusiastic teacher with a great deal of knowledge and has really helped me get back to playing piano again despite not having played properly for years.
My husband and I are really enjoying our lessons with Callum. We are both beginners and Callum is really inspiring us to learn! He makes theory accessible and enjoyable, and always has new ideas for music for us.
My son is thoroughly enjoying his piano lessons with Callum. Callum structures the lessons really well allowing my son to push his understanding of and explore the piano in terms of chord patterns and transposing without being bogged down with set pieces and music theory. Callum is very receptive and an interesting person. We feel very lucky to have him as our piano tutor.
Callum has managed to tailor piano lessons for my daughter as soon as he started teaching her. He is lovely, reliable,
warm and flexible
Callum is professional, engaging and enthusiastic. He has totally reinvigorated my teenage son's approach to piano lessons. I am so pleased we found him. What had become a chore is once again a pleasure!
I originally took piano lessons for a few years as a child and in the past few months have been starting to get back into playing again. I have taken several lessons with Callum now and already feel that I am progressing much quicker than I was when studying independently. He has a friendly and supportive teaching style and is clearly very knowledgable about music. The points he raises during lessons are pertinent and provide useful insights that I can then work on during my own practice throughout the week. I would happily recommend Callum to others and look forward to continuing my lessons with him.
