I am an English Literature, English Language, Film Studies and Creative Writing tutor with a 2:1 Hons degree in English Literature and Cultural History and a wide range of experience in educating children and young adults.

I have spent the last three years working as a librarian and Writer in Residence at an English specialism Academy. As well as administering the Accelerated Reading course, working directly with students and teachers to vastly improve students’ access to learning through reading, my role extended to working one-on-one and in small groups tutoring pupils. I have worked with GCSE students in the run-up to their exams, practising past paper and enabling them to improve their course work. I have also acted as a mentor to year 11 students, during their all-important GCSE year. I was also able to support independent learners that came into the library with subjects such as Film Studies, having not only completed film studies modules at University but also holding a Media A Level. While working at the academy I gave up my free time to assist with the A Level photography course as I am myself a prize winning photographer.

In my role as Writer in Residence I have taught creative writing to students from year 7 right through to year 13, in part by drawing on my own creative writing and also by bringing in local and national literary figures such as Melvin Burgess to inspire the young people. My own writing experience includes: publishing articles, art/photography reviews, blogging and writing short stories. I have also worked for a successful writer with multiple published works of fiction and historical fiction, providing historical background research.

Other experience as an educator includes working as a cover supervisor in the Liverpool area during which time I went into a number of secondary schools and sixth form colleges and taught English classes. I also provided SEN and general classroom support, working for an extended period of time at Saint Francis Xavier’s supporting a physically disabled child with learning difficulties. I gained experience of working with primary age pupils while working at St Mary’s primary school in Shrewsbury as a teaching assistant, supporting the class room teachers in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes.

While at university I was tested by an educational psychologist and found to be in the top two percent of the country for verbal reasoning. In a role such as tutor, this ability to comprehend and communicate complex ideas effectively is clearly of the utmost importance. My experience of working with SEN pupils has taught me patience and increased my understanding of the highly individual challenges different learners face. It is this patience combined with my verbal reasoning skills, qualifications and varied experience working in education that makes me an ideal tutor.

Currently in my final year of University and Dave was helping me with my final essay. Great tutor I couldn't fault him in any way. Would recommend him to anyone. Thanks again Dave!

Great lessons, I really learn a lot each week about literature and Dave knows each of the books we study in great depth. Our lessons have been a great help.

Lily has had two lessons with David now and was a little nervous at first, but by the second lesson felt very comfortable with him. He is very positive and gives very good feedback and is also really encouraging to the point Lily is looking to help herself as well by researching different things herself.
